Elementary children who are a part of KidsOnMission on Wednesdays received a blue book called Foundations for Kids. This is a tool that we are giving to families so that they can read and consider the Bible with their children regularly in a simple, fun, easy way. The book includes a short reading, an explanation of the Bible story, a fun activity (crack-the-code, maze, drawing, etc.), and a prayer prompt. These can take as little as 5 minutes to complete and are ideal for building a habit of Bible study in our kids. And each week they lead up to the Wednesday night Bible lesson. This means that elementary kids will be more prepared for their group discussions and will be able to share with and encourage their peers. You can see the reading schedule on the right-hand column of our Wednesday schedule here.
Why are we doing this? We understand that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Deut 8:3; Matt 4:4). We want our kids to eat the Word regularly in the same way that they eat their meals. We want to build a hunger for and dependence on God’s Word.
What if my child is not a great reader? No problem! If you have 5 minutes, you can do the activity with them. It is designed so that parents can easily guide their children through the reading and activity.
Is this required? No, but it is encouraged. Kids can still come on Wednesdays and fully participate without doing Foundations. But doing it will enrich the Wednesday experience and, more importantly, it helps the kids to hide God’s Word in their hearts for life (Ps 119:10-13) and to meditate on it day and night (Ps 1:2; Josh 1:8).
